April 12, 2014: Double-header with Chuck Brodsky & Pierce Pettis

Chuck Brodsky brings heart-warming context to history so comical and tragic you couldn't make them up. He's a regular at Kerrville, Philly & Newport Folk Festivals and embodies the spirit of storytelling we love at The Folk Mission. Listen to a song about life, love, parents, racism and righting wrongs - cloaked in a baseball that got his songs enshrined in the Baseball Hall of Fame sound recording library. Get it now? "double-header"

Pierce Pettis: Did you know one of the leaders of the new-folk movement lives in Mentone, AL, has been covered by Art Garfunkle, David Wilcox, Joan Baez, Andrew Peterson, Garth Brooks, etc -- but hasn't performed in Huntsville for years? He's a songwriter's songwriter, an amazing open-tuning composer and every single one of his songs seeks to bring us to a higher truth in plain English. Since we're on sports jargon, here's one of my favorite songs of his wrapped up in a football metaphor:

Feb. 15, 2014: An Evening with Andy Gullahorn

We could try to describe Andy Gullahorn's hilarious stage banter and insightful songs, but contemporary folk icon David Wilcox says it better. "Andy’s songs are full of humor, clear vision, and compassion. His voice is humble and strong; his writing is kind and cutting; his sound is familiar and intriguing; and it all comes together around a beautiful heart that holds a truth that is inspiring and believable.” The Nashville-based singer-songwriter is a Kerrville Folk Festival New Folk winner. Also, funny. AndyGullahorn.com

    An Evening with Chuck Brodsky

As a storyteller, Chuck Brodsky is a national treasure. He gathers important stories from people and places unknown to us - and spins them into tales we have somehow always known. Also, he's funny as hell. The Associated Press says "Brodsky clearly belongs in the top echelon of contemporary songwriters." And the New York Times declares "With insight and good humor, he has taken these life experiences and distilled them into old fashioned story songs brimming with wit and compassion."

    An Evening with Jeff Black

With five critically acclaimed solo albums and songs covered by artists including Alison Krauss, Sam Bush, Dierks Bentley and Waylon Jennings, Jeff Black has done something that's increasingly rare: found a home in Nashville - and built a loyal following for his solo live shows on the road.

But his success will come as no surprise after hearing his eclectic Americana storytelling delivered in a Tom Waits-meets-Marc Cohn voice that moves effortlessly from intimately conversational to a fiery fervor.

Black's latest release "Plow Through the Mystic," features friends Sam Bush, Jerry Douglas, Matraca Berg, Gretchen Peters and Kim Richey. The album take listeners down personal paths of faith, doubt and spiritual grit, liberated by tones of gritty neo-folk and dirt blues.
